CHAPTER SIX

THIS was their last day together.

Erin glanced at the clock, hoping Nathan would get up soon. She wanted to see him before she left for work. This would be their last evening together and she wanted it to be special. She had made up her mind to postpone all her worries until tomorrow morning. Selfish, perhaps, but irresistible.

A slight sound drew her attention towards the stairs, visible through the open kitchen door. Her breath caught at the sight of him. He was on his way down, yawning, wearing pristine black pyjamas. Still creased, they were obviously fresh from a package. Instead of his usual gorgeous, he looked sweet, Erin thought, a bitter-sweet smile on her lips. Boyish, even, with his hair standing on end. Her heart somersaulted in her chest as he noticed her and sent her one of those lazy, devastating smiles.

“Good morning.” Erin tried to hide her grin behind her coffee-cup, but he noticed and grinned right back before taking his place at the table.

“Like my pyjamas? I bought these just for you. I seem to recall that you didn’t much care for my choice of night-wear when we first met.”

Erin briefly fought back the blush, but then allowed it to spread over her face along with her smile. “Oh, I won’t complain. Nothing looked good on you too,” she said, marveling at her sudden boldness and getting her reward when he leaned over and kissed her quick and hard on the lips.

“Admit it, you just put those on,” she accused. “They don’t look slept in.”

He just grinned and reached for the cereal, leaving her heart flip-flopping in her stomach.

Did he realize this was their last day together? Would he understand?

Suddenly she felt very nervous.

“I’m picking Thomas and Sally up at the airport early tomorrow morning,” she told him, struggling to keep her voice calm and nonchalant. “Would you like to come?”

“Sure. Will you wake me up?”

“No problem. Five-thirty.”

“Or I could wake you up.”

The tone was unmistakable. She ignored him.

“Or we could wake each other up.”

Knife in butter, butter on toast.

“Or, best of all, we could just skip the waking up bit altogether and not go to sleep at all.”

Erin silenced him by stuffing a piece of buttered toast into his open mouth just as he was about to offer a new suggestion. It had been tempting to silence him in another way, to lean over and grab the silly-looking lapels on his pyjamas, pull him close and kiss him hard.

But why resist anyway?

She watched him finish the toast and drink from a small glass of orange juice, a frown on his forehead as something on the radio news distracted him from putting tantalizing images into her head.

The last Friday. What the hell.

Half a second later, she was in his lap. Behind her back, there was a clatter as he dropped his glass to the table. She cradled his face in her hands and kissed him deeply, desperately. They could have tonight, but after tomorrow there would be no more morning kisses.
